Anti-Racism Activism at UNE

I am not aware of what kind of groups that deal with race are already available on campus. So, besides the fact that I have read these papers and the stories I’ve heard from people I know. I’m not the best person to ask about this. This is not even factoring in how generally oblivious within the predominantly white social spheres of UNE I am to begin with. Just as of writing this I’m currently not well acquainted with someone of color who better understands these topics specifically relating to UNE. Most of the stories I’ve heard have happened outside of UNE.

You could say that I live within a white bubble. At home in Connecticut, I was not in the total whiteout that most of the community experience, but it was still very white. My high school was different in that it wasn’t totally white but had a significant minority population when compared to other schools in the area. In fact, the race did come up in interschool conflicts. At the time I could remember feeling a lot like Kyle Korver. I was aware that these issues were present within my community and actively joked about them with my friends. Whenever it became very poignant as to cause interschool incidents, you’d think it would stir a lot more up in the general school population, but it was never taken too seriously by the student body. Life in New York was not as white as my life in Connecticut. Astoria is known for being a variable melting pot of a variety of different cultures at roughly the same economic level. As a younger kid, the concept of race was utterly foreign and all that mattered was who was fun to play with. So, it was never made apparent to me at any point, which makes it easy to push it aside whenever it gets brought up. Even when I was leaving high school one of the things, I was secretly excited for was that when I got to college nobody would care all the social structure from high school. As if childhood had started again and nothing mattered except whether you were fun to hang out with. So, when it comes to ignoring racial issues on campus. I don’t really know. I’m not going to say like I’m purposely ignoring them but I’m ignoring them. So maybe that’s the thing I could change. It’s so easy to ignore issues like a race around campus. It can be hard to convince people to invest their time at college into these issues as the opportunity cost can be high. It’s an easier sell to people of color who have gone through these experiences and understand it’s important, but to people who have lived within the white bubble for most of their lives, it can be a bit of a difficult sell. You’re going to have to rely on a lot of the methods used to build a social movement to really get people engaged in these issues.

I do believe that it’s something you could do, but again one of the main barriers to this is to get a college student with classes and tests to give these issues the time of day. So, it may be better to mix race awareness projects with either interesting events, like food or movie about these topics, or an academic session that lets you improve academic skills while learning about these topics and not missing out on study time. These strategies are like the ones employed by Rick Warren and his formation of the Saddleback Church in how he changed the context in which people discussed faith. This helps in getting people interested in the discussion beyond just what people are talking about. The channels which to conduct this project are the preexisting clubs like the Black Students Union Club. These activities should be compact in time and on days that are easy for people to attend. The activity should be engaging while at the same time not being too complicated as to confuse or mistake those attending to the issues being portrayed. One of the biggest difficulties I can see in running this club is finding enough materials that are easily digested and easily shared. Another thing this club will have to overcome is getting enough people to be interested in it and consistently show up. I have personal experience with running a club in high school and getting people to consistently show is one of the greatest challenges to running any club. One thing I found is that you must run on a weekly schedule. Running on a weekly schedule will help keep you and your club in your members’ heads. At this club meetings, you must remember that you are the guide and Steer the conversation away from normal social interactions towards the topics you are there to discuss.

Overall, it’s very doable but it will not be easy to overcome the hurdles that will be presented. In the end, I do believe it is worth it to get people more informed about these issues on campus. These are the types of issues you’d believe we’ve already solved, but we haven’t. But like in any situation being informed is the best way to solve anything.

So, besides the fact that I have read these papers and the stories I’ve heard from people I know. I’m not the best person to ask about this. This is not even factoring in how generally oblivious within the predominantly white social spheres of UNE, to begin with. Just as of writing this I’m currently not within ubiquitous disposal of someone who better understands these topics specifically relating to UNE. Most of the stories I’ve heard have happened outside if UNE.

So I have some experience with it but I am definitely guilty of pushing it aside whenever it gets brought up. Even then when leaving high school one of the things I secretly was excited for was that when I got to college nobody cared there’s almost like if childhood started again and nothing mattered except whether or not you were fun to hang out. So, when it comes to ignoring racial issues on campus. I’m not going to say like I’m purposely ignoring them but I’m ignoring them. Anti-Racist Activism

I am not too aware of what kind of groups are already available on campus. So, besides the fact that I have read these papers, I’m not the best person to ask. First things first you need the social norm that exists and causes inequalities. Let’s create a hypothetical social norm as an example. handedness is kind of weird and at the most relevant so, it will make a good thing to arbitrarily divide the population with. We are going with the numbers that are saying right-handedness is 70% of the population and left-handedness is 30 percent of the population. I’m doing this because it makes the left-handed minority larger and a lot more significant within the population of UNE to be a problem. Now the social norm we should go with is something that Works in a minor everyday occurrence within life at UNE. So let’s go with food swipes into the cafeteria. Right-handed people get to use the card reader and get into the cafeteria quickly while left-handed people must input their student ID and wait until they find the corresponding ID. Despite how weird and bizarre this might be to us this is the norm in this hypothetical UNE. Now, who is inciting incident starter? Put your hands together for the amiable Jane Doe. Jane Doe has a lot of friends at UNE. She is part of 7 different clubs, 3 off campus, and, has 2 on-campus jobs. It’s easy to say that she interacted everyone on campus and is good friends with at less a quarter of them. And our good friend Jane doe just so happening left hand. A day comes by where Jane Doe isn’t firing on all cylinders. She is tried from all work she did yesterday and Is not in the mood to stand in line to get her soon ID church so she can get some food in the cafeteria she pulls out her student ID and goes up to the scanner and scans it. At first, nothing happens she walks in and gets to start eating her food, but she’s halfway done with her meal. One of the cafeteria staff comes up to her and asked her to properly get checked into the cafeteria. She is almost entirely exhausted from her all nightery studying applied hyper-baboon physics. She ignores them the card reader accepted her meal swipe the same way as if she had been, I checked in, so she continues eating her food. Eventually, the cafeteria employee called insecurity too remove her.  She’s eventually dragged out of the cafeteria and brought to security’s office with many people that know her seeing her being removed. This initial incident causes immediate action within Jane Doe strong ties. Her close friends Are very clearly outraged by this knowing current our hard work and dedication. Eventually, Her friends start to realize how BS the cafeteria System is, and they pass on this outrage to their friends and close associates. And everyone starts to Think about how this system has more Disadvantageous than advantageous. So, using the strong and weak connections that movement starts to form around Jane doe’s getting kicked out of the cafeteria. People start to boycott the cafeteria until it lets everyone use the card reader. As the cafeteria loses business students begin organizing Jenner nights where dorms get together and cook dinner together. Even though this is inconvenient people still do it because of social pressure. Even in this hypothetical scenario that is so unlikely that it’s more like a fantasy scenario you could see how movements from around events and persist the social expectations and pressure.

Social Change

Social change movements fail a lot of the time because they do not utilize the social aspect of people’s lives. Taking it not just a political issue that people share the common but a social rallying point. It’s about utilizing the strong and weak ties that hold adult society together. The strong ties should be spread across social strata and the weak ties will follow. It also requires an identifiable thing someone could do in their everyday life something that they can sacrifice that will Help people work towards their goals. The fundraiser, not partaking in a service, Social awareness campaigns, and/or, Boycott all help the goal and Begin to incorporate themselves into people’s social habits.

Habit

The first thing is you start with a small incremental change that is not big or life change. Then you start to pick up the pastes with that help with you getting a custom too.

600 Inform Whiteness and Blackness

To what degree do participants in the Whiteness Project and participants in the Blackness Project agree about the ways race figures in their lives? In what ways do they experience race in their lives?

Of course, with the shared topic of race in both projects cover a lot of the same ground. An example of this is the two interviewees Barbara (Blackness) and Carson (Whiteness). Both talk about self-worth and how race undermines it. Barbara talks about how “Race has really been a construct that has been manufactured and we don’t talk about that. This is part of the issue of not talking about race, is not understanding of where the concept of race comes from and how it’s been manipulated and how we’ve been manipulated to buy into it and to accept it as a valuable way in which to identify ourselves.” And Carson echoes this sentiment in “It’s hard to know that I will be given more because of who I am. And it makes me want to call into question my merit.” Now Barbara is referring to African Americans while Carson is talking about his own merit. This show scar of how the system of slavery affect people goes deep and affect how people see and value them selfs. When intuition bias is a factor in how people hire it can call into question whether the employee of that intuition meet the stands they need or they were the right color.

 

What views do participants in the Whiteness Project and participants in the Blackness Project have about how institutions of power act about race in our society?

The Blackness Project talks a lot more about institutions from the past and their effects on the present. An example “For 200 years being told you’re not even a person maybe 2/3’s of a person and then you’re told well that the tables are set against you. it’s never been a leveled playing field and that’s stupid too. Anyone who thinks the only way to get out is to put someone below me, that dismisses all of us but they. don’t know that yet.” Lakeisha. Again, like in the last question, we see a far broader application of race. While the Whiteness project tends to focus on the individual and their experiences with race. The struggle and how it changes depending on who you are and where you’re from. Can change drastic if  “Taken advantage of the fact that I was white and and you know I always kind of knew that if I got in trouble that I could just get a lawsuit up show up and you know is a slap on the wrist I would be in jail if I wasn’t white you know I’ve been arrested probably over 20 times and you know the only thing I have on my record to show for it is is a public intoxication and they have there been some Hefty drug possession charges and I’ve never served time I sold drugs you know I did what I wanted to do know that there was going to be absolutely no consequences.” Connor.  Now this is likely this is due to the different formats as the whiteness project is individual interviews will the blackness project is a long-form documentary with interviews interspersed.

 

As we think about ways, we could work towards ending racism, what should your readers think about the similarities and differences you’ve noticed. How do the insights you’ve generated help us understand why racism (and the inequities it justifies) persists and what hints about how to end racism do they offer us?

The prime thing that’s keeping please going right now is probably economic inequality and geographic separation. Both of these ideas’ kind of factor into each other you know poor people of color will we stuck in urban areas. While poor white people tend to be spread out across rural areas. People are just stuck in their own little bubbles they need to be moved around and given economic opportunities. It’s like how you need to keep water moving with enclosed marine systems to aerate the water and allow things to live and thrive. I believe that more should be done with these concepts as they seem to have yielded interesting perspectives into how people think and respond to race that could be crucial towards either reconciling it with people or out and out eliminate it.
